Memorial Update

On Friday, October 22, we will dedicate our memorial to the Regiment’s Fallen at Ft. Benning. Significant efforts have been made to breathe life into this memorial. From concept, design, funding and the dynamic data that accompanies this physical monument, this has been a project in the finest traditions of our Regiment.

As we prepare for this dedication, let us not forget other memorials to the Regiment, such as those at Vilseck, the Patton Museum and Gettysburg. Can you name others? Do you have a particular memory about on of these memorials that you’d like to share? Give context and dimension to these gifts to the future by sharing your thoughts and feelings. The Archives Continue to Grow

We’d like to thank Joe Deskevich and Eric Larson for their contributions to the Association’s archives.

Joe contributed his 1990 Border SOP that has been scanned and will eventually go the Reed Museum.

Eric lent us his 1976 Regimental yearbook to be scanned into our digital archives. We are grateful to both for their generosity and commitment to preserving the Regiment’s lineage.

We continue to work towards making our archives available to all online and in an OCR searchable format. One learning point is that we have a treasure trove of photos from WWII with no captions. PLEASE, take the time to put names and dates and other identifying information on the back of your photos so that the scene captioned isn’t lost.

Attending the reunion can have its issues. Some of it is not knowing if anyone that you served with being there, attendees span the range from the Second World War through those serving our Regiment today. ALL are welcomed and ALL are brothers and sisters of the Spur. You may think that you didn’t contribute, or that you are wounded, or your position wasn’t lofty enough… NONE OF THESE ARE VALID BARRIERS TROOPER! Mount up and join us.

Montgomery Meigs

Former commander of USAREUR

STUTTGART, Germany — Retired Gen. Montgomery Meigs, a combat veteran who commanded the Army in Europe for four years and hailed from a storied line of military officers, died 6 July 2021 in Texas. He was 76.

Meigs led U.S. Army Europe from 1998 to 2002, overseeing about 60,000 soldiers on the Continent. He also commanded NATO’s peacekeeping force in Bosnia, when thousands of U.S. soldiers fanned out across the Balkans.

As the USAREUR boss in the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Meigs was in charge as garrisons across Europe went from having relatively relaxed post-Cold War security conditions to becoming the highly secured compounds of today.

An obituary from an Austin, Texas, funeral home did not mention the cause of Meigs’ death.

Michael V RUOTOLO

Died on July 12, 2021 at age 77. Beloved husband of Kathleen. Loving father of Jane Murray and Michael. Dear brother of Jerry, Della, the Late Joan, Ernest and Fred. Cherished grandfather of Patrick, Kate, Christopher, Samantha and Lia.

Michael was a devoted retired Lieutenant of the NYPD. He also proudly served as a specialist in the US Army as a Sharpshooter (Riffle M-14) and recipient of the Good Conduct Medal.

Interment was at Calverton National Cemetery.
