McCrystal Assumes Command

Col. Rob McCrystal’s speech during the 10 June Change of Command on the Grafenwöhr Parade Field.

General officers, distinguished guests, family, and friends of the Regiment … Thank you for attending today’s ceremony.

Dragoons and families, thanks for the great welcome and for your exceptional service to our Army and Country. You are the best our great nation has to offer. I thank God for each of you and the opportunity to join your ranks.

Joe and Sandy Ewers – thanks for the incredible welcome and transition … You made Jen and I feel right at home, and we are grateful for your friendship. Jen and I offer a congratulatory “well done” and wish you the very best in your next adventure.

Lieutenant General Kolasheski and Brigadier General Hilbert… I appreciate the opportunity and privilege to command this Regiment. I understand the tremendous responsibility of being the 82^nd Col. and look forward to leading and serving. The 2d Cavalry Regiment has a distinguished lineage dating back 186 years, and it is an honor to protect and carry on that legacy.

Lieutenant General Donahue – My first informative Army experience was as a CTLT cadet assigned to your rifle company. Thanks for the positive start, your example, and the mentorship along the way.

Former Colonels of the Regiment, thanks for your counsel and support. Brigadier General Ellis – thanks for your mentorship and advice over the years. Likewise, though he can’t be here today, thanks to Lieutenant General Simms (77)-who mentored me over weekly breakfast in Kandahar when he was Dragoon 6.

My parents, Scott and Judy, thanks for the loving support an example. Wish you could be here.

Most importantly, my wife Jennifer, my kids are Jay, Jillian, Cole, and Charlotte. Thanks for the love, support, and keeping me humble … that’s you twins. Jen, over the past twenty-year journey, much of it filled with warfare or preparing for warfare-in the highs and lows that go with each, you’ve been the constant by my side. Thanks, and I love you.

Command Sergeant Major Pingel – Outstanding work! The Regiment looks great! Dragoons… Because of your efforts, and the efforts of those that went before you, this Regiment has a stellar reputation. That reputation will continue. More than words can convey, I look forward to serving with you-anytime-anywhere.

The “as given” speeches of both the 81st and 82d Colonels of the Regiment will be included on the Association History Site

Across the fourth through 14 June senior leadership from our Association deployed in support of the Second Cavalry Regiment’s Change of Command.

Key highlights of the trip included a reconnaissance of Mödlereuth and the Flossenburg concentration camp by Frank Hurd and Tim White, after which I joined them for a recon of the Czech Republic highlighting some key sites of our Regiment at the end of the Second World War.

We were then included in celebrating the continuation of leadership since 1836, with Col. Rob McChrystal assuming command from Col. Joe Ewers. It was a spectacular day, the Regiment looked magnificent, and Honorary Col. of the Regiment Frank Hurd participated in the passing of the regimental standard as part of the official party. The outgoing and incoming Colonels of the Regiment acknowledged the significant role that the Association does and can play in support of this storied organization.
