Merry Christmas!

After being ordered to abandon Fort Assiniboine in Montana in the spring of 1907, the entire Regiment was ordered to concentrate at Fort Des Moines, Iowa. The Regiment was not long at Fort Des Moines and was often deployed, including an expedition to South Dakota to deal with an uprising by the Ute Indians. However, Christmas 1908 saw the Regiment “home” in Iowa.

In a faded envelope in the Lou Holtz archives dated October 27, 1945, I found the Christmas schedules for Troops A, G, I and M. These materials were sent from Guy Dorsey to George Megilligan.

Megillian is the Spanish American War veteran credited with the founding of our organization in 1899; more to follow in 2023 about him. Each of these little booklets list the members of the troop as well as the menu for the day. Here is G Troop’s program for Christmas, 1908.

Pork chops, roast turkey, roast pork, oyster soup and oyster dressing, oranges, bananas, beer, and cigars. And, let me not forget my favorite, cocoanut layer cake—what a menu! In Iowa, in 1908!

Who among us can’t recall a Christmas away from family fulfilling the obligations of freedom. Personally, I remember a Christmas meal at Hof and many holidays at Ray’s Diner, which were always impressive in quality, quantity, and atmosphere.

I am grateful for those such as Dorsey, Megillian, and Holtz who have done so much to preserve our history so that we can reflect on what has come before us. Perhaps in a quiet moment this holiday season you’ll Remember Your Regiment and what that meant to you at Christmas. I hope that some of you will choose to share your stories with me.

On behalf of our Chair, Bryan Denny, and our Board, I want to wish each of you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Thank you for all that you have sacrificed and contributed for freedom and to advance the very ideal of America.
